Was The US Involved In Israel's Attack On Iran?

The United States is Israel's closest, most important ally. Most military operation that Israel undertakes involves US support, if only in supplying weapons and ammunition. The US is far and away the most important logistical supporter of the Middle East nation.

So, before we know anything about the attack on Iran, we do know that the Israeli attack aircraft were American-made, including our most advanced fighter, the F35. It is also probable that much of the fuel for those aircraft came from the US, as well as the bombs, bullets, and some missiles. However, Israel's defense industry does produce a substantial number of missiles, weapons, and other ammunition.

President Donald Trump emphasized the close weapons support that the US has given Israel in this battle in a post on Truth Social this morning:

I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to "just do it," but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn't get it done. I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come - And they know how to use it.

Reports are that dozens of Israeli fighter jets streaked across the Iranian skies last night and this morning. These included the McDonnell Douglass F-15s, the General Dynamics F-16s, and the aforementioned Lockheed Martin F-35s.

Although not explicitly acknowledged, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) likely utilized the American Global Positioning Satellite System (GPS) to traverse the hundreds of kilometers to precisely reach their targets in Tehran and other localities in Iran.

The IDF Jets were, no doubt, using Valero Energy JP-8 Jet Fuel, provided through a contract between the US Department of Defense Logistic Agency and the State of Israel.

The IDF Jets required refueling to reach Iran, which lies more than 1,700 kilometers (1,100 miles) from Israel. While the IDF does have a limited number of Boeing 707 (converted) and Lockheed KC-130 tankers, they have only a minimal number, by most reports, with only a handful. To provide fuel for the dozens of IDF planes that took part in this attack would require additional tanker support, most likely supplied by the US Air Force or Navy, both of which have planes in the region.

Although Secretary of State Marco Rubio initially claimed that the US had no involvement in the Israeli attacks, it is now becoming clear that may not be the case. In a recently posted article, Axios asserts that this attack was eight months in the planning, and Israel fully informed the Americans of its evolving plans.

Furthermore, Axios reports that the US has given Israel the "green light."

Two Israeli officials claimed to Axios that Trump and his aides were only pretending to oppose an Israeli attack in public — and didn't express opposition in private. "We had a clear U.S. green light," one claimed.

This is a developing story, one that will take many twists and turns. But one thing remains clear: the United States was heavily involved, at least in the initial stages of planning and preparation.
